Sulfur and Nitrogen Release From Co-Pyrolysis of Coal and Biomass Under Oxidative and Non-Oxidative Conditions

Yukun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of pyrolysis atmosphere on the conversion of biomass/coal blends to chars and volatile matter, as well as the release of sulfur and nitrogen to the gas phase. It was found that oxygen concentration under oxidative atmospheres promoted solid-phase conversion at higher temperatures, while had no discernible effect at lower temperatures. Co-pyrolysis of coal and biomass showed a synergistic effect under inert atmosphere, but inhibited volatile matter evolution under oxidative atmospheres. Sulfur and nitrogen compounds were mainly released at specific temperature ranges, with varying release patterns under different atmospheres.

Torrefaction of corn straw in oxygen and carbon dioxide containing gases: Mass/energy yields and evolution of gaseous species

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: Pulverized corn straw biomass was torrefied in carrier gases containing oxygen and carbon dioxide, with the proportions of 3-7% O2, 13-17% CO2, and 80% N2. The mass and energy yields of the biomass decreased with increasing temperature and oxygen concentration during oxidative torrefaction. Chlorine and sulfur contents of the biomass were released to the gas phase, with amounts increasing as temperature and oxygen concentration increased. Temperature had a pronounced effect on mass and energy yields and the evolution of elements to the gas phase.

Mechanism of biochar-gas-tar-soot formation during pyrolysis of different biomass feedstocks: Effect of inherent metal species

Dongdong Feng et al.

Summary: This study delves into the thermal behavior and evolution profiles of major volatile fragments from three types of biomass pyrolysis, revealing that high temperature promotes tar to soot conversion and the insertion of O atoms increases soot's microcrystalline structure size. Inherent metal species can inhibit soot formation.
