Life-extension classification of offshore wind assets using unsupervised machine learning

B. Yeter et al.

Summary: The present study aims to analyze the life-extension of fixed offshore wind turbines from both a technical and economic perspective. The study proposes a methodology that combines structural integrity assessment and economic analysis to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of life-extension decisions. The study also introduces a nonlinear corrosion model to address the growing concern of corrosion-related failure mechanisms in monopile offshore wind turbines. The results of the assessment are presented through risk-return diagrams and used for classification using unsupervised machine learning algorithms.

A developed failure mode and effect analysis for floating offshore wind turbine support structures

He Li et al.

Summary: This study extends the conventional failure mode and effect analysis methodology by introducing weights for severity, occurrence, and detection to analyze failures in the support structure of a floating offshore wind turbine. Recommendations for corrections and preventive actions are suggested based on the analysis. The proposed technique is validated through a comparison study, showing that it is more in line with practical use and offers flexibility.

Multi-agent based simulation-optimization of maintenance routing in offshore wind farms

A. Allal et al.

Summary: Offshore wind energy is expected to become a major source of energy in the future, with maintenance being a complex and costly activity increasingly attracting attention. This study proposes a simulation-optimization approach for offshore wind farm maintenance to minimize cost and maintain high turbine availability. A multi-agent modeling and simulation approach was used to address system complexity, with the Ant Colony System algorithm optimizing maintenance routing. Various scenarios were experimented to demonstrate improved cost, energy generation, and turbine availability throughout the farm's lifecycle.

Hybrid adaptive model to optimise components replacement strategy: A case study of railway brake blocks failure analysis

Frederick Appoh et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel hybrid adaptive model (HAM) that integrates Gaussian mixture probabilistic machine learning, Weibull time-to-failure feature, and value of information techniques for complex engineering failure analysis. The model aims to establish an optimum component replacement strategy to reduce failures and potential accidents, considering brake blocks as fundamental systems for emergency brake application under nonlinear and dynamic conditions. By combining predictive wear modeling, threshold maintenance replacement strategy estimation, and cost-effective replacement options evaluation, the HAM technique provides a better balance between safety and cost-effectiveness compared to other popular ML approaches.

Offshore wind turbine operations and maintenance: A state-of-the-art review

Zhengru Ren et al.

Summary: Operations and maintenance of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are essential for the development of offshore wind farms. Maintenance, in particular, plays a crucial role in the overall cost of energy due to practical constraints and high costs associated with offshore operations. The impact of maintenance on the life cycle of offshore wind farms is complex and uncertain, with maintenance strategies significantly affecting efficiency, profitability, safety, and sustainability. Onsite maintenance involves intricate marine operations that rely on practical factors for efficiency and safety, while potential negative environmental impacts also need to be considered.
