Design and management strategies for low emission building-scale Multi Energy Systems

L. Bartolucci et al.

Summary: Multi energy systems are effective in moving towards a decentralized low-carbon system, with hydrogen being a promising energy carrier. Research shows that building-scale configurations can achieve simultaneous environmental and economic benefits, and the integration of hydrogen technologies and storage systems is an effective solution for reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

Towards Net Zero Energy Factory: A multi-objective approach to optimally size and operate industrial flexibility solutions

L. Bartolucci et al.

Summary: This study proposes a methodology for sizing and operating new flexibility options within a German carpentry, targeting to be operated as Net Zero Energy Factory (NZEF). It aims to maximize the integration of locally generated electric power and the electric demand for manufacturing processes. The study shows that optimally controlled energy storage systems can significantly reduce energy exchange with the grid, and the introduction of electric vehicles increases renewable energy self-consumption and carbon emissions savings.

The implementation of the Circular Economy: Barriers and enablers in the coffee value chain

Maarten van Keulen et al.

Summary: The research explores a business model experimentation in the value chain of a coffee importer in Amsterdam to address the gaps in sector-specific understanding of barriers and enablers in the Circular Economy (CE). It identified coherence in governmental policies, industry silo thinking, and circular design standardization as major barriers, while common awareness, vision, and solid business models were crucial enablers. Additionally, the study highlighted the sensitivity of companies' identity and market perception, the importance of fact-based communication, and the clear interaction between barriers and enablers in the adoption of CE initiatives. This research complements existing literature on CE with a sector-specific perspective from the coffee industry.

Anaerobic co-digestion of oil-extracted spent coffee grounds with various wastes: Experimental and kinetic modeling studies

M. R. Atelge et al.

Summary: The study found that oil extraction from spent coffee grounds as a pre-treatment strategy has a positive impact on increasing methane yield. Moreover, co-digestion of defatted spent coffee grounds with spent tea waste, glycerin, and macroalgae showed potential advantages. Additionally, a triple mix of defatted spent coffee grounds, spent coffee grounds, and spent tea waste outperformed other mixed substrates.

Interval Optimization to Schedule a Multi-Energy System with Data-Driven PV Uncertainty Representation

Mahtab Kaffash et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the day-ahead optimal schedule of multi-energy systems (MESs) with different energy carriers, proposing a non-parametric probabilistic forecast method to reduce uncertainty in PV generation. The effectiveness of this method is validated through a case study on a real industrial MES, showing significant improvement in probabilistic forecast calibration compared to point forecast.

Optimal Multi-Operation Energy Management in Smart Microgrids in the Presence of RESs Based on Multi-Objective Improved DE Algorithm: Cost-Emission Based Optimization

Mohammad Ghiasi et al.

Summary: Today, in developing countries, achieving optimal energy management with cost reduction and emission reduction is crucial for power utilities. The use of renewable energy sources is an effective way to achieve these goals. In this research, an improved multi-objective differential evolutionary optimization algorithm is suggested for dispatching electricity in a smart microgrid system while considering economic and emission factors.

Applying a circular economy approach to valorize spent coffee grounds

S. Mayson et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using spent coffee grounds as a fuel for roasting to achieve a circular economy system. Spent coffee grounds are more energy-efficient than conventional biomass but less than fossil fuels. The integrated energy-waste management strategy can promote industrial symbiosis and value recovery in the coffee supply chain, laying the foundation for achieving a circular economy system.
