Co-fermentation of immobilized yeasts boosted bioethanol production from pretreated cotton stalk lignocellulosic biomass: Long-term investigation

Kamran Malik et al.

Summary: This study focused on decomposing lignocellulosic biomass into monosaccharides using chemical and biological pretreatments, followed by long-term fermentation/co-fermentation for bioethanol production. Results showed high sugar utilization efficiency and bioethanol yield in the first cycle, but a decline in bioethanol production in subsequent cycles. The use of immobilized yeasts for co-fermentation was effective in improving bioethanol production from pretreated lignocellulosic biomass.

Bioethanol steam reforming over monoliths washcoated with RhPt/CeO2-SiO2: The use of residual biomass to stably produce syngas

Bernay Cifuentes et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that a lower pressure drop in monoliths favors higher ethanol conversion, and using two monoliths in series improves H-2 yield compared to using just one monolith. Additionally, a decrease in carrier gas amount contributes to diffusion limitations in monoliths, reducing the H-2/CO ratio.

Monoliths washcoated with AuCu catalysts for CO removal in an ethanol fuel processor: Effect of CeO2-SiO2 dual support on the catalytic performance and reactor cost

Bernay Cifuentes et al.

Summary: CO removal from syngas was evaluated using structured AuCu/CeO2-SiO2 catalysts in a single catalytic unit. Addition of SiO2 into AuCu/CeO2 increased surface area and reduced cost, but decreased CO conversion. Washcoated AuCu/CeO2-SiO2 catalyst on monolith outperformed powder samples at temperatures above 260°C, showing potential for economic H-2 cleanup processes.

Production of high concentration bioethanol from reed by combined liquid hot water and sodium carbonate-oxygen pretreatment

Jie Lu et al.

Summary: The study established a method for producing high-concentration bioethanol from reed with reduced energy demand, achieving a significant increase in bioethanol concentration, reduced distillation energy consumption, and weakening of the interaction among cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin through lignin and hemicellulose removal after LHW-Na2CO3/O-2 pretreatment.

Life Cycle Assessment of Bioethanol Production: A Review of Feedstock, Technology and Methodology

Tahereh Soleymani Angili et al.

Summary: LCA studies on bioethanol production have shown a reduction in global warming potential in most cases, while conflicting results have been found in categories such as acidification, eutrophication, and photochemical oxidant formation due to feedstock provision. Pre-treatment is considered a crucial step in bioconversion processes, with limited attention given to uncertainty analysis in publications.

Modeling and multi-objective optimization of variable air gasification performance parameters using Syzygium cumini biomass by integrating ASPEN Plus with Response surface methodology (RSM)

Deepak Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: This study developed a robust method for modeling and optimizing variable air gasification parameters using ASPEN Plus simulator and Response Surface Methodology (RSM). A comprehensive thermochemical equilibrium-based model of downdraft gasifier was developed by minimizing Gibbs free energy, and good agreement was attained between simulated and experimental results. The air gasification process was modeled in four phases, including biomass drying, decomposition, gasification, and gas filtration, with sensitivity analysis performed to obtain syngas composition and optimize gasification performance.

Extraction of γ-Oryzanol from defatted rice bran using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2): Process optimisation of extract yield, scale-up and economic analysis

Aparna Kayathi et al.

Summary: The study utilized supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction to extract gamma-oryzanol from defatted rice bran, replacing traditional toxic solvent extraction methods. Results showed that extraction at low pressures and with the use of ethanol as a co-solvent can achieve a high yield of gamma-oryzanol, reaching up to 36,000 mg.kg(-1). The techno-economic assessment using Aspen plus software demonstrated a promising return on investment for processing rice bran.

Bioethanol Production from Sugarcane Press-Mud: Assessment of the Fermentation Conditions to Reduce Fusel Alcohol

Nestor Sanchez et al.

Summary: Bioethanol is a promising platform molecule in a biorefinery context, but impurities limit its conversion to valuable industrial products. Proper pretreatment and fermentation conditions can reduce impurities in bioethanol, with the fermentation temperature being a key factor in controlling fusel alcohol content. Integrating these conditions into a biorefinery concept can yield valuable products like H-2 and ethylene.
