Hypoeutectic Mg-Zn binary alloys as anode materials for magnesium-air batteries

Fanglei Tong et al.

Summary: Zn has high solid solubility in Mg and can improve the performance of Mg alloys. The addition of 2wt% Zn enhances anodic efficiency and specific capacity, while 6wt% and 15wt% Zn reduce the discharge properties.

The influence of heat treatment on discharge and electrochemical properties of Mg-Gd-Zn magnesium anode with long period stacking ordered structure for Mg-air battery

Xingrui Chen et al.

Summary: The influence of heat treatment on the discharge and electrochemical properties of Mg95.28Gd3.72Zr1.00 alloy as an anode for Mg-air battery was investigated. The T6 heat treated alloy showed improved discharge performance with good specific energy output. The LPSO structure in the alloy plays a key role in enhancing the dissolution of alpha-Mg and exfoliation of discharge products. Conversely, the (Mg, Zn)(3)Gd phase resulted in a passive film formation and voltage drop.

The Real Current Density Distribution on Mg Surface

Jufeng Huang et al.

Summary: By comparing the distribution of electronic current density and ionic current density on a Mg electrode, it was found that the current densities measured by SVET were nearly ten times lower than the electronic ones, possibly due to the presence of hydrogen bubbles on the electrode surface. Understanding the real current density distribution on the Mg surface helps to deepen the comprehension of Mg anode dissolution.

Understanding the discharge behavior of an ultra-high-purity Mg anode for Mg-air primary batteries

Xingrui Chen et al.

Summary: This study used experiments and modeling methods to identify that charge transfer resistance is the main internal anodic resistance for ultra-high-purity (UHP) Mg discharge in Mg-air primary batteries, and the drop in anodic efficiency is caused by the anodic hydrogen reaction. In addition, it was observed that UHP Mg has a strong preferred dissolution orientation during discharge at low current densities.
