Specific sources of health risks induced by metallic elements in PM2.5 during the wintertime in Beijing, China

Mei-Yi Fan et al.

Summary: This study found that metallic elements in PM2.5, although a minor fraction, still posed a threat to human health, especially for children. Arsenic (As) was the major contributing element to non-cancer risk for children, while nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn) were the major contributing species to non-cancer risk for adults.

Toxic metals in outdoor/indoor airborne PM2.5 in port city of Northern, China: Characteristics, sources, and personal exposure risk assessment

Bo Fang et al.

Summary: In Caofeidian, China, outdoor and indoor PM2.5 samples were collected and analyzed for 15 elements to investigate the characteristics, sources, and health risks of PM2.5-bound metals. The study identified industry sources contributing the most to the PM2.5-bound metal sources, with most indoor metals originating from outdoor emission sources. Both adults and children were found to suffer carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks from the PM2.5-bound metals in Caofeidian, suggesting the need for emission control measures.

In vitro assessments of bioaccessibility and bioavailability of PM2.5 trace metals in respiratory and digestive systems and their oxidative potential

Zhen Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of PM2.5-bound metals in the respiratory and digestive systems of humans in urban and industrial areas of Nanjing city, showing that the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of metals are element and body fluid dependent. Furthermore, source oriented metals in PM2.5 exhibited diverse bioaccessibility in different human organs.
