The effect of climate on leaf micromorphological characteristics in some broad-leaved species

Hakan Sevik et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the micromorphological characteristics of landscape plants grown in different climate conditions. The results showed that plants grown in the Mediterranean climate generally had higher values for these characteristics compared to plants in other climate types.

Enhancing the accuracy of machine learning models using the super learner technique in digital soil mapping

Ruhollah Taghizadeh-Mehrjardi et al.

Summary: Digital soil mapping approaches utilize a variety of machine learning models and super learning techniques to predict and map soil properties. By using permutation feature importance analysis, the contribution of individual covariates on the prediction can be quantified. Results showed that the super learner outperformed individual base learners in predicting soil properties, with geomorphic and groundwater data playing important roles according to PFI analysis.

Patterns and driving factors of biomass carbon and soil organic carbon stock in the Indian Himalayan region

Jitendra Ahirwal et al.

Summary: Tree-based ecosystems play a crucial role in climate change mitigation. The study analyzed carbon stock patterns in different land-uses in the Indian Himalayan Region and found that natural forests have the highest biomass carbon stock, while plantation forests have the highest soil organic carbon stock. The relationship between environmental variables and carbon stock was not significant.

Effects of land use and land cover on soil erosion control in southern China: Implications from a systematic quantitative review

Jia Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that bare land has the greatest impact on soil erosion, while cropland and grassland have the smallest impact. When vegetation coverage exceeds 60%, soil erosion tends to stabilize. Land use with multiple vegetation layers or contact cover can reduce runoff and sediment values.

Prediction of soil organic carbon and the C:N ratio on a national scale using machine learning and satellite data: A comparison between Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3 and Landsat-8 images

Tao Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, satellite sensors (Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3) were used with machine learning techniques to predict soil organic carbon content and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in Switzerland. Results showed that models based on Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 performed better in predicting SOC content, while Sentinel-3 performed better in predicting C:N ratio at coarse resolutions. The study also highlighted the importance of remote sensing variables in soil prediction models of various scales.

C-STABILITY an innovative modeling framework to leverage the continuous representation of organic matter

Julien Sainte-Marie et al.

Summary: The understanding of soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics has advanced significantly in recent years, shifting from the belief that most SOM consists of recalcitrant compounds to the view that it is a range of polymers continuously processed into smaller molecules by decomposer enzymes. The proposed C-STABILITY model combines compartmental and continuous modeling approaches to accurately reproduce SOM cycling processes, emphasizing the influence of substrate accessibility on SOM turnover. The model also considers enzymatic and microbial biotransformations of substrate, providing new insights on how depolymerization and decomposers ecology impact organic matter chemistry and amount during decomposition and at steady state.

Impacts of climate change scenarios on European ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior L.) in Turkey

Tugrul Varol et al.

Summary: Climate change is expected to impact forest ecosystems through various factors, potentially leading to the extinction or endangerment of valuable species. Using the entropy method, this study estimated the geographic distribution of Fraxinus excelsior L. in Turkey under current and future climate conditions. The results suggest that Fraxinus excelsior L. in Turkey is significantly influenced by precipitation levels, and its distribution may narrow in the future climate scenarios.

Hyperspectral band selection and modeling of soil organic matter content in a forest using the Ranger algorithm

Yuanyuan Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigated a forested Eucalyptus plantation in Guangxi, China, to establish a hyperspectral prediction model of soil organic matter content. Effective band selection methods were proposed, and models were built using different algorithms to achieve higher modeling accuracy. It was found that the Ranger algorithm for band selection and the ANN or RF algorithm for modeling were effective in predicting SOM content in red soil plantations.
