Constructing and optimizing urban ecological network in the context of rapid urbanization for improving landscape connectivity

Xinxin Huang et al.

Summary: This study applied landscape pattern indexes and the MCR model to construct an urban ecological network, finding that many ecological land types are distributed in the tributaries of the Yangtze River, but the number of ecological corridors is decreasing in 2015. Through an ecological network optimization plan, the connectivity of urban ecological functioning stability can be promoted.

Identifying key areas of imbalanced supply and demand of ecosystem services at the urban agglomeration scale: A case study of the Fujian Delta in China

Ruhong Xin et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant spatial heterogeneity and imbalance between the supply and demand of ESs at the urban agglomeration scale. Urbanization has led to supply shortages in some cities, a diverse and polarizing trend in the matching degree between ES supply and demand, and a mild to extreme level of coordination between ESs supply and demand, with some cities experiencing increasing levels of extreme incoordination with increasing urbanization.

Incorporating ecological constraints into urban growth boundaries: A case study of ecologically fragile areas in the Upper Yellow River

Xuedi Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new framework for delineating urban growth boundaries in an ecologically sustainable manner, taking into account ecological constraints and the impact of human activities on the environment to guide sustainable urban development. The results suggest that focusing solely on urban development plans may have negative impacts on natural resources and ecological sustainability, highlighting the importance of considering ecological factors in urban planning.

Dynamic simulation of coastal wetlands for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area based on multi-temporal Landsat images and FLUS model

Hongjiang Guo et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands play an important role in protecting coastlines. The coastal landscape of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has undergone significant changes, with natural wetlands decreasing due to human activities and artificial wetlands and non-wetlands increasing. The landscape has become more fragmented and complex, with increasing heterogeneity. Future simulation models predict growth in mangroves under wetland protection, as well as increases in tidal flats, paddy fields, and construction land in different scenarios.

Integrating a Forward Feature Selection algorithm, Random Forest, and Cellular Automata to extrapolate urban growth in the Tehran-Karaj Region of Iran

Hossein Shafizadeh-Moghadam et al.

Summary: The study combined FFS-RF algorithm with Random Forest to create a transition index map for guiding urban growth prediction. Analysis of land cover data from 1998-2008 and 2008-2018 revealed temporal non-stationarity in urban growth drivers, with altitude and distance from greenery being important in one period, and distances from crop and barren becoming crucial in another.

Simulating urban expansion by incorporating an integrated gravitational field model into a demand-driven random forest-cellular automata model

Jianjun Lv et al.

Summary: This study proposes an integrated gravitational field model (IGFM) by combining comprehensive economic indicators, time-cost distance, and information flow intensity to quantify urban spatial field intensity. The random forest algorithm is adopted to mine the complex transition rules of a demand-driven CA model. The IGFM-RF-CA model can achieve high simulation accuracy for the whole area, especially in developed cities.

Territory spatial planning and national governance system in China

Yansui Liu et al.

Summary: Spatial planning refers to the long-term planning and overall arrangement of land resources and space layout under the jurisdiction of a country or region government, aiming to achieve effective control and scientific management of territorial space and promote the balance between development and protection. This study systematically reviewed the evolution history of China's spatial planning and the key issues it faces, such as various types, overlapping conflicts, complex approval process, and difficulties in planning implementation. China is innovating to establish a unified NTSP system and promoting the transformation of spatial planning to integrated NTSP.

Understanding the drivers of sustainable land expansion using a patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model: A case study in Wuhan, China

Xun Liang et al.

Summary: Cellular Automata (CA) are widely used in modeling land use dynamics. This study introduced a patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model that achieved higher accuracy compared to other CA models. The model can help policymakers manage future land use dynamics and create more sustainable land use patterns.
