Salinity controls soil microbial community structure and function in coastal estuarine wetlands

Guangliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study characterized soil bacterial communities and microbial functional genes in a coastal wetland ecosystem across a salinity gradient, revealing the critical role of soil salinity as an environmental filter on microbial diversity and biogeochemical processes. Higher bacterial richness and phylogenetic diversity were observed in saline soils, with specific taxa more prevalent in different salinity conditions. Salinity filtering effect shapes soil bacterial community composition and inhibits soil biogeochemical processes in estuary ecosystems.

Bacterial community composition and assembly along a natural sodicity/salinity gradient in surface and subsurface soils

Jisheng Xu et al.

Summary: Sodicity/salinity significantly impact soil microbial communities, with strong influences on bacterial community compositions compared with other soil properties. Decreases in sodicity/salinity result in reductions of potential biomarkers for high community tolerance to salt or soda, while taxa associated with decomposition of organic matter and nutrient transformations increase.

Differential responses of soil bacteria and fungi to altered precipitation in a meadow steppe

Xuechen Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that soil bacterial communities were more sensitive to changes in precipitation, while fungal communities were more affected by inter-annual differences in precipitation. Increased annual precipitation led to a shift in dominance from bacteria to fungi in the microbial community. Soil water content, pH, and total phosphorus were key factors influencing soil microbial community diversity under altered precipitation conditions.

Summary: The study found that the composition of soil organic matter (SOM) in moist acidic tundra is closely linked with soil factors and bacterial community, but vegetation, soil properties, and bacterial community composition did not show clear spatial structuring.

Changes in soil microbial community structure and function following degradation in a temperate grassland

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: Grassland degradation has a significant impact on soil microbial communities, with a decrease in bacterial diversity and changes in relative abundance of specific bacterial and fungal taxa. Belowground biomass, soil organic carbon, and total nitrogen are positively correlated with changes in bacterial diversity. Pathogenic fungi are significantly decreased by degradation, indicating a potential shift in soil microbial functionality due to grassland degradation.
