Indicators of biodiversity in an intensively cultivated and heavily human modified landscape

Gianpasquale Chiatante et al.

Summary: The loss of biodiversity in agroecosystems due to farming intensification is a major concern, and focusing on indicator species can help monitor environmental changes. This study in northern Italy found that biodiversity was positively related to natural vegetation patches, but negatively affected by artificial surfaces and habitat diversity. Birds and reptiles were identified as potential indicators of vertebrate biodiversity in the region.

Summary: The study demonstrates that increasing the amount of woody vegetation cover in urban landscapes can promote species diversity and abundance of native birds, while the aggregation of woody cover primarily has no benefit.

Niche Analysis and Conservation of Bird Species Using Urban Core Areas

Vasilios Liordos et al.

Summary: The study found that bird species in managed small-sized green spaces in urban core areas of Greece and Finland show different responses to urban environmental conditions, with some species exhibiting high niche specialization. Urban adapter species are more associated with large green spaces, while urban exploiter species are more associated with green spaces closer to the city center.
