Evaluating landscape influences on hydrologic behavior with a fully-integrated groundwater - surface water model

S. K. Frey et al.

Summary: This study constructed a large-scale, high-resolution groundwater-surface water model to examine the sensitivity of surface water flow and groundwater conditions in agricultural landscapes. Results showed that increasing depression storage had a greater impact on reducing peak flood flows compared to increasing soil hydraulic conductivity or field surface roughness, while increases in all three parameters contributed to flood peak mitigation and groundwater recharge.

Agriculture in boreal and Arctic regions requires an integrated global approach for research and policy

Daniel Altdorff et al.

Summary: Northern regions are becoming new agricultural frontiers due to food security concerns and accelerated global warming, but the scope and environmental consequences of northern agriculture are not fully understood. Sustainable growth of northern agriculture depends on a comprehensive understanding of opportunities and challenges, highlighting the need for better coordination and emphasis on this sector.

Summary: Agricultural drainage ditch management can affect the survival, growth, and development of northern leopard frog embryos and tadpoles. Cleared/dredged ditches supported earlier tadpole growth and development, but differences in water quality variables may impact their overall development.
