Connectivity and directionality in estuarine channel networks

Matthew Hiatt et al.

Summary: This article uses graph theory to quantify the connectivity of multidirectional estuarine channel networks, finding higher levels of structural connectivity in larger networks with looping structures. Real-world networks contain signatures of both mutually evasive flood and ebb channels, as well as branching structures, with flow direction influencing dynamical connectivity.

The vulnerability of tidal flats and multi-channel estuaries to dredging and disposal

Wout M. van Dijk et al.

Summary: Dredging activities in estuaries play a crucial role in maintaining access for large vessels to major ports, but can have adverse effects on morphology and ecologically valuable habitats. Analysis from experiments and models suggest that dredging and disposal strategies may be unfavorable for the long-term morphology of estuary systems, with a shift towards main channel scour disposal potentially beneficial for the preservation of multi-channel systems.
