Synthesis of 20-Deuterated Bacteriochlorophyll-d Homolog and Its 31-Epimerically Controlled Self-aggregation

Summary: Epimerically pure samples of farnesylated 20-deutero-8-ethyl-12-methyl-bacteriochlorophyll-d were prepared via regioselective 20-deuteration of naturally occurring chlorophyll-a. Compared to nondeuterated compounds, the semi-synthetic deuterides showed slightly blue-shifted Qy bands in their monomeric states and formed self-aggregates in a J-type fashion, dependent on the 31-stereochemistry.
