High-Performance Ketone Sensing in Vapor Phase Enabled by o-Carborane-Modified Cyclometalated Alkynyl-Gold(III) Complex-Based Fluorescent Films

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The utilization of a film-based fluorescent sensor as a GC detector is reported for the first time, with the newly synthesized Au-CB showing remarkable aggregation-induced emission (ME) property that is highly sensitive to ketones. The film sensor demonstrated instant and fully reversible response to ketones with detection limits lower than 0.08 and 13.0 ppm for cyclohexanone and acetone, respectively, making it a promising alternative to commercial detectors for specific miniaturized GCs.

A highly selective and sensitive off-on fluorescent probe for the detection of nerve agent mimic DCNP in solution and vapor phase

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a hemicyanine-based dual-modal probe for the detection of a nerve agent mimic has been developed, showing fast response, high selectivity, and excellent sensitivity. The probe-loaded test strips can sense DCNP vapor in low concentration and distinguish it from other nerve agent mimics visually and fluorescently.

Ultrafast-response, highly-sensitive and recyclable colorimetric/fluorometric dual-channel chemical warfare agent probes

Ping Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, two donor-acceptor type small organic fluorescent molecules (T1 and T2) based on the terpyridine group were synthesized and characterized for colorimetric/fluorometric dual-channel probe towards diethylchlorophosphate (DCP). The sensors showed high selectivity, sensitivity, and recyclability in both solution and gas phase, with different response mechanisms attributed to the electron-donating substituents on T1 and T2. The sensing mechanism was further supported by NMR spectra and calculations. Additionally, filter paper strips constructed with T1 and T2 were developed for real-time, on-site monitoring of DCP vapor with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Acid is a potential interferent in fluorescent sensing of chemical warfare agent vapors

Shengqiang Fan et al.

Summary: Fluorescent sensing materials commonly used for detecting chemical warfare agents and simulants may give false positives in the presence of acids due to the nitrogen-based groups' basicity. This study examines the response of pyridyl-containing sensing materials to acid-containing and acid-free Sarin and simulants.

Flexible and Transparent Oligothiophene-o-Carborane-Containing Hybrid Films for Nonlinear Optical Limiting Based on Efficient Two-Photon Absorption

Wan Feng et al.

Summary: The structure-property relationship of fluorophores with favorable nonlinear optical properties was studied by synthesizing a series of terthiophene-o-carborane dyads and triads. It was found that the carborane unit has a significant impact on introducing the aggregation-induced emission characteristic. These fluorophores exhibit good photoluminescence in solid states and have potential applications in optical limiting.

Enhanced two-photon absorption of sandwich-like coordination complexes based on squaraine and metallomacrocycle derivatives

Jianyang Zang et al.

Summary: The drastic changes in two-photon absorption coefficients resulting from slight changes of electronic delocalization through coordination interaction play a significant role in enhancing the nonlinear optical properties of multi-chromophore structures. Experimental results demonstrate that the 2PA phenomenon is the dominant factor contributing to the NLO properties of the complexes, with the values of degenerate 2PA cross sections being noticeably enhanced by coordination interactions. Importantly, the complexes exhibit high 2PA values and multiple excitation wavelengths, potentially offering a novel approach for creating useful nonlinear absorbing materials.
