Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and Maternal Opioid-Related Diagnoses in the US, 2010-2017

Ashley H. Hirai et al.

Summary: From 2010 to 2017, significant increases in neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and maternal opioid use disorder (MOD) rates were observed in the US, especially after the implementation of new International Classification of Disease codes in 2016. There were notable variations at the state level in both NAS and MOD rates.

Prenatal methadone exposure disrupts behavioral development and alters motor neuron intrinsic properties and local circuitry

Gregory G. Grecco et al.

Summary: The study found that prenatal methadone exposure can lead to impaired physical and neurobehavioral development in offspring after birth, including physical growth, motor activity, and sensorimotor development; these effects are associated with methadone accumulation in the placenta and fetal brain, as well as reduced neuronal density in the motor cortex and disruption in motor neuron intrinsic properties and local circuitry connectivity.

Microbiota control of maternal behavior regulates early postnatal growth of offspring

Yujung Michelle Lee et al.

Summary: Maternal behavior is crucial for the optimal development and growth of offspring, while the intestinal microbiota plays a key role in regulating growth and development. Certain strains of Escherichia coli were found to be pathogenic to the maternal-offspring system, leading to growth stunting by interfering with maternal behavior rather than directly affecting the infants. This study provides new insights into how microbiota regulates postnatal growth and highlights an additional variable to consider when studying the regulation of maternal behavior.
