Classifying wetland-related land cover types and habitats using fine-scale lidar metrics derived from country-wide Airborne Laser Scanning

Zsofia Koma et al.

Summary: Mapping 3D vegetation structure in wetlands using country-wide ALS data is important for conservation and monitoring. A new workflow was developed to classify wetland-related land cover types and habitats using fine-scale lidar metrics derived from country-wide ALS data.

Identifying fine-scale habitat preferences of threatened butterflies using airborne laser scanning

Jan Peter Reinier de Vries et al.

Summary: This study used LiDAR technology and machine learning algorithms to analyze the habitat preferences of threatened butterflies across the Netherlands. The results showed that the vertical variability and horizontal heterogeneity of vegetation structure are key determinants of butterfly species distributions, especially in low-stature vegetation environments.

Niche separation of wetland birds revealed from airborne laser scanning

Zsofia Koma et al.

Summary: By using country-wide airborne laser scanning data in combination with bird observations, researchers were able to quantify niche filling, overlap, and separation of wetland bird species in the Netherlands. The study found that different bird species occupied wetland habitat space in distinct ways, with varying degrees of niche overlap and filling. The results demonstrate the importance of incorporating fine-scale 3D habitat preferences into ecological niche analyses for biodiversity conservation efforts.
