Monitoring damage evolution of ceramic matrix composites during tensile tests using electrical resistivity: Crack density-based electromechanical model

J. P. Goulmy et al.

Summary: Three ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) were characterized in tension to further develop and understand the data provided by electrical resistance measurements. The observed changes in electrical resistance were compared to acoustic emission spectra and classical unloading/reloading cycles. A model was proposed to predict the evolution of resistance as a function of the damage state of the three composites, providing accurate results for materials with different mechanical and physical behaviors.

Real-time monitoring of fatigue damage by electrical resistance change method

Riccardo Nobile et al.

Summary: In this work, electrical resistance change was measured during fatigue tests of notched metal specimens at different stress levels, showing measurable variations related to fatigue damage progression. The resistance first decreases in the initial stages of loading, and subsequently presents a quick increase starting around 30 to 40% of fatigue life, possibly associated with irreversible phenomena induced by fatigue load cycles. The experimental method proved to be valid for studying the evolution of fatigue damage.

High-sensitive flexural sensors for health monitoring of composite materials using embedded carbon nanotube (CNT) buckypaper

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of highly sensitive piezoresistive strain sensors for health monitoring of composite materials, focusing on the working mechanisms of CNT buckypaper sensors during loading and releasing processes. The study demonstrates the dynamic stability and durability of the in-situ nano sensor under monotonic and cyclic flexural loading in low strain range. Additionally, the long-term response behavior of the nano sensor and its suitability for potential application scenarios are highlighted.

CNT/epoxy interleaves for strengthening performance of filament wound composite structures

Soo-Jeong Park et al.

Summary: The study experimentally verified the strengthening performance of carbon nanotube (CNT)/epoxy interleaves for structural design of filament-wound cylinder structure. Incorporation of CNTs through CNT/epoxy interleaves could enhance matrix strengthening and interfacial bonding.
