Dendrites of Neocortical Pyramidal Neurons: The Key to Understand Intellectual Disability

Alberto Granato et al.

Summary: Pyramidal neurons are the most abundant cells in the neocortex and their dendrites play a crucial role in various neurological and mental disorders. Different types of intellectual disabilities may be sustained by different parts of the pyramidal neuron dendritic tree or by dysregulation of their interaction.

Single-neuron dynamical effects of dendritic pruning implicated in aging and neurodegeneration: towards a measure of neuronal reserve

Christoph Kirch et al.

Summary: The study simulated the effects of neuronal morphological aging on intelligence and cognitive function. It was found that dendritic pruning affects neuronal integrity, reducing firing rate and energy efficiency, leading to a decrease in dynamic range. Neuronal resilience was found to be neuron-specific and heterogeneous, strongly influenced by dendritic topology and soma position.
