Oral and Palatal Dentition of Axolotl Arises From a Common Tooth-Competent Zone Along the Ecto-Endodermal Boundary

Vladimir Soukup et al.

Summary: Through studying the development of axolotl dentition, it was found that both dental arcades originate from a common tooth-competent zone and teeth develop distinctively in each prospective tooth field. The formation of the complex tetrapod dentition is controlled by compartmentalization of tooth-competent zones and progressive addition of new tooth germs. Additionally, the ecto-endodermal boundary may serve as a potential source of instruction factors for initiating the odontogenic program.

Distinct tooth regeneration systems deploy a conserved battery of genes

Tyler A. Square et al.

Summary: The study found that a similar set of genes are expressed during tooth regeneration in zebrafish and stickleback, demonstrating a high degree of conservation in the process. This suggests that despite differences in morphology and regeneration mechanisms, two fish species still share common genetic programs in their tooth regeneration processes.
