Structure-function analysis of PGRP-S1 from the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata

Fang-Fang Liu et al.

Summary: PGRP-S1 is a protein with bacteriolytic activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, mainly expressed in the midgut of larvae. Site-directed mutagenesis revealed that residues H62 and T175 retained bacteriolytic activity, while H61, Y97, H171, and C179 lost activity. Different residues of PGRP-S1 are involved in antibacterial and antifungal activities.

Bmintegrin beta 1: A broadly expressed molecule modulates the innate immune response of Bombyx mori

Chongyang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the full-length cDNA sequence of Bmintegrin beta 1 was obtained from silkworm. The gene was found to be ubiquitously expressed in different tissues and organs, with highest expression in fat body and hemocytes. Bmintegrin beta 1 may play a role in pathogen agglutination and provides novel insights into its immune functions.

Target antifungal peptides of immune signalling pathways in silkworm, Bombyx mori, against Beauveria bassiana

T. Geng et al.

Summary: Insects use antifungal innate immunity as a defense mechanism against entomogenous fungi, with the Toll, Jak/STAT, and IMD signaling pathways being activated by the fungus Beauveria bassiana in silkworms. Inhibition of these pathways results in reduced antifungal activity in silkworm hemolymph. The study identified specific antifungal peptides regulated by each pathway, showing that antimicrobial peptide genes in B. mori have evolved through expansion and selection of existing genes to adapt to fungal challenges. This insight aids in understanding insect immune regulation mechanisms.
