Recapitulating macro-scale tissue self-organization through organoid bioprinting

Jonathan A. Brassard et al.

Summary: The 3D bioprinting approach combines organoid-forming stem cells and extracellular matrix to achieve tissue self-organization, allowing for the generation of tissues with complex structures and diverse cell types at centimeter scales. This method opens up new avenues for drug discovery, diagnostics, and regenerative medicine by controlling tissue self-organization from millimeter to centimeter scales.

Mechanism and reversal of drug-induced nephrotoxicity on a chip

Aaron Cohen et al.

Summary: The kidney is crucial for maintaining fluid balance, glucose control, and drug excretion, but drug-induced nephrotoxicity can lead to kidney dysfunction. Research shows that certain drugs disrupt proximal tubule polarity at subtoxic concentrations, causing issues. By inhibiting glucose reabsorption, the adverse effects of drugs can be significantly reduced.

Integration of Electrospun Membranes into Low-Absorption Thermoplastic Organ-on-Chip

Johanna Chuchuy et al.

Summary: Organ-on-chip systems have gained increasing interest, allowing for in vivo-like microenvironments and generation of various tissues or organs in miniaturized form. Commonly based on microfluidic modules with PDMS membranes, these systems face limitations due to PDMS's absorption of small hydrophobic molecules. Integrating electrospun membranes into PMMA modules offers a solution to create microenvironments resembling native extracellular matrix.

From Clones to Buds and Branches: The Use of Lung Organoids to Model Branching Morphogenesis Ex Vivo

Ana Ivonne Vazquez-Armendariz et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional organoid culture systems are valuable tools for studying organ development, with a focus on the lung which is a complex organ comprising multiple cell types. Although mechanisms leading to branching morphogenesis have been explored, there is still a need for deeper understanding of biological processes governing cell fate decisions and lung patterning. This review discusses the current lung organoid systems, their limitations, and future directions for research.

Summary: Organoids are biological systems grown in vitro that self-organize into 3D cellular tissues of specific organs, with brain organoids being valuable models for studying human brain development. Researchers are developing improved tools, such as microfluidic chips and bioreactors, to track and image brain organoids in real-time on a chip, enabling long-term live-imaging of the growing organoids with high resolution.
