Influences and impacts of biofouling in SWRO desalination plants

Tamar Jamieson et al.

Summary: Producing clean potable water is a growing challenge, especially with increasing drought conditions worldwide. Reverse osmosis (RO) technology is popular for treating different types of water, but faces limitations due to membrane fouling, particularly biofouling. This paper summarizes the impact of biofouling on RO membranes in seawater desalination plants and discusses future research requirements and control measures for biofouling in SWRO membrane systems.
