Nucleation mechanisms in a SiO2-Li2O-P2O5-ZrO2 biomedical glass-ceramic: Insights on crystallisation, residual glasses and Zr4+structural environment

M. R. Cicconi et al.

Summary: The influence of time and temperature on phase stabilisation, crystal phases evolution, and physical properties of lithium-silicate were studied. The effect of nucleation temperature on mineral assemblage and fracture toughness was observed through reverse-engineering a commercial material. The spatial distribution of structural units influenced the final properties.

New, tough and strong lithium metasilicate dental glass-ceramic

Viviane O. Soares et al.

Summary: Glass-ceramics based on lithium metasilicate (LS) crystals were developed with a house-of-cards microstructure. The material exhibited favorable mechanical properties such as high fracture toughness and strength, as well as reasonable machinability, making it a promising candidate for dental restorative applications. Further optimization of its properties could enhance its suitability for various dental applications.

Toughening by revitrification of Li2SiO3 crystals in Obsidian® dental glass-ceramic

Julia Lubauer et al.

Summary: The research found that the Obsidian glass-ceramic went through two growth stages during the crystallization process, and the changes in crystal phase fraction were accompanied by a transition in crystal phase types, indicating a change in mechanical properties; during the crystallization process, the toughness of the material showed a reverse trend with the decrease in crystal fraction and size, mainly due to the relaxation of residual stresses caused by the spheroidization of crystals.

Concurrent kinetics of crystallization and toughening in multicomponent biomedical SiO2-Li2O-P2O5-ZrO2 glass-ceramics

Julia Lubauer et al.

Summary: The crystallization kinetics of two pre-crystallized multicomponent dental glass-ceramics were investigated, showing that the isothermal stage is dominated by the transformation of Li2SiO3 in Li2Si2O5, inducing the impingement of nanocrystals into clusters. The kinetics of toughening closely followed the evolution of crystallinity in both systems.

Microstructural development during crystallization firing of a dental-grade nanostructured lithia-zirconia glass-ceramic

Angel L. Ortiz et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the microstructural development of a commercially-available dental-grade nanostructured lithia-zirconia glass-ceramic during crystallization firing, revealing a complex chemical composition and crystal phase transition process. These dental glass-ceramics can form abundant nanostructures at appropriate temperatures, but caution should be taken to avoid over-firing that may damage their unique nanostructure. Therefore, optimizing the clinical performance of these glass-ceramics can be achieved through microstructural design.

Relationships between fracture toughness, Y2O3 fraction and phases content in modern dental Yttria-doped zirconias

Renan Belli et al.

Summary: This study revised the relationship between fracture toughness and Yttria content in modern zirconia ceramics by evaluating 10 modern Y2O3-stabilized zirconia materials. The study found an inverse power-law behavior between K-Ic and Y2O3 content, as well as a linear relationship between K-Ic and the fraction of the transformable t-phase within a certain range of volume percentage.
