Dual-light triggered metabolizable nano-micelles for selective tumor-targeted photodynamic/hyperthermia therapy

Yong Deng et al.

Summary: This study presents a dual-light triggered tumor phototherapy by using a hydrophobic photo-thermal drug and an amphiphilic iridium-based photosensitizer loaded into nano-micelles. These designed nano-micelles demonstrated effective blood circulation, passive tumor targeting ability, remarkable photodynamic and photothermal conversion capabilities, and potential for combined tumor ablation therapy.

Mono-/Bimetallic Neutral Iridium(III) Complexes Bearing Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Substituted N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Synthesis and Photophysics

Wan Xu et al.

Summary: The synthesis and photophysics of four neutral heteroleptic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes incorporating thiophene/selenophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ancillary ligands were systematically investigated. The substitution of thiophene with selenophene and biscomplexation led to red-shifted absorption and fluorescence spectra.

Ferroptosis Photoinduced by New Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes and Its Synergism with Apoptosis in Tumor Cell Inhibition

Hao Yuan et al.

Summary: The limited therapeutic efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) to hypoxic solid tumors has been improved by two new benzothiophenylisoquinoline-derived cyclometalated Ir-III complexes, IrL1 and MitoIrL2. Both complexes demonstrated a type I PDT process and induced photoinduced ferroptosis in tumor cells under hypoxia, with MitoIrL2 outperforming IrL1 in inhibiting tumor growth through a synergistic effect of ferroptosis and apoptosis.

BSA-encapsulated cyclometalated iridium complexes as nano-photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy of tumor cells

Yao Xu et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy is a promising treatment method that utilizes photosensitizers to improve therapeutic efficacy. In this study, three iridium complexes were encapsulated within bovine serum albumin to form nano-photosensitizers for PDT of tumor cells. The results showed that one of the nano-photosensitizers (Ir1@BSA) had the best photodynamic therapeutic effect on tumor cells, providing a basis for the development of new nano-photosensitizers.

Rational design of iridium-porphyrin conjugates for novel synergistic photodynamic and photothermal therapy anticancer agents

Liping Zhang et al.

Summary: Near-infrared emitters are crucial for biomedical applications, and nanoparticles incorporating iridium-porphyrin complexes exhibit deep-red absorbance and long-wavelength excitation for photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy. These complexes combine the advantages of small organic molecules and transition metal complexes as photosensitizers.
