Encapsulating N-Heterocyclic Carbene Binuclear Transition-Metal Complexes as a New Platform for Molecular Rotation in Crystalline Solid-State

Mingoo Jin et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel design of emission crystalline molecular rotors with the ability to rotate elements based on the type of implanted metal. The activation energy for rotation can be tuned by changing the metal, impacting the energy barrier and electronic stabilization during rotational motion. The design provides a platform for manipulation of rotary dynamics and solid-state emission in crystalline molecular materials.

A Future Perspective on Phototriggered Isomerizations of Transition Metal Sulfoxides and Related Complexes

Sebastian B. Vittardi et al.

Summary: Photochromic molecules are a type of light-activated bistable molecules, and the design criteria highlight a class of ruthenium and osmium sulfoxide complexes that undergo phototriggered isomerization. The mode of action involves an excited-state isomerization of the sulfoxide from S-bonded to O-bonded. Specific examples are discussed to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the isomerization. Future research directions include exploring new synthetic methods and materials for isomerization in transition metal polypyridine complexes.

Nitro-Nitrito Photoisomerization of Cationic Platinum(II) Complexes in the Solid State: Reactivity in Polymorphic Crystals and Glassy State

Ibuki Nakamura et al.

Summary: Nitro-nitrito isomerization, a well-known photoreaction in metal complexes, was studied in different packing environments using a cationic platinum(II) nitrito complex. The polymorphs of the salt exhibited various conversion rates at different temperatures, with the beta-form showing a space group change upon photoirradiation. A salt with the (CF3SO2)(2)N- anion displayed both crystalline and glassy states at low temperatures, with the crystalline state showing around 30% conversion at 100 K. Less densely packed crystals in these salts deteriorated upon photoirradiation.

Molecular motion in organometallic crystals: photoinduced 2π/5 rotation of n-hexyltetramethylcyclopentadienyl ligand

Hidetaka Nakai et al.

Summary: The crystalline-state photoreaction of a newly prepared organorhodium dithionite complex with n-hexyltetramethyl-cyclopentadienyl ligands was studied, and it was found that the photoisomerization of the dithionite group induced a 2 pi/5 rotation of the Cp-Hex ligand.
