Application of Machine Learning Algorithms in Plant Breeding: Predicting Yield From Hyperspectral Reflectance in Soybean

Mohsen Yoosefzadeh-Najafabadi et al.

Summary: Recent advances in high-throughput field phenotyping have provided plant breeders with efficient tools for evaluating a large number of genotypes for important agronomic traits. The study evaluated the robustness of machine learning algorithms in predicting soybean seed yield using hyperspectral reflectance, and found that the random forest algorithm had the highest performance among others.

Near-infrared spectroscopy outperforms genomics for predicting sugarcane feedstock quality traits

Mateus Teles Vital Goncalves et al.

Summary: This study compared the prediction performance of genomic and NIR data for two feedstock quality traits in sugarcane population, finding that NIR had the highest prediction accuracy, while genomics had the lowest. Integrating these predictors did not significantly improve the prediction accuracy, suggesting that NIR-based prediction can be an effective strategy for predicting the genetic merit of sugarcane clones.

Early prediction of biomass in hybrid rye based on hyperspectral data surpasses genomic predictability in less-related breeding material

Rodrigo Jose Galan et al.

Summary: The demand for sustainable biomass sources is increasing globally. Prediction models using hyperspectral reflectance data show higher prediction abilities compared to genomic prediction for biomass-related traits in winter rye, especially for mid-heritable traits. Environmental variances greatly affect the predictive power of both models, but integrating genomic and hyperspectral data can enhance prediction abilities for dry matter yield.

Multi-omics prediction of oat agronomic and seed nutritional traits across environments and in distantly related populations

Haixiao Hu et al.

Summary: The integration of multi-omics data has been shown to improve the prediction accuracies of oat agronomic and seed nutritional traits. Multi-omics prediction outperformed genomic prediction in single-environment trials, and multi-trait models with omics data showed superior performance in multi-environment trials. Additionally, a two-kernel linear model utilizing omics data was proposed to improve genomic prediction accuracy for various traits with prior knowledge of genetic architecture.

High throughput can produce better decisions than high accuracy when phenotyping plant populations

Holly M. Lane et al.

Summary: This simulation study shows that increasing throughput can help compensate for increased error rates in phenotyping, leading to more accurate estimation of genotypes. Studies in genetic mapping should consider increasing population size to improve accuracy with high-throughput phenotyping methods.

Analytical challenges and solutions for performing metabolomic analysis of root exudates

Monica Escola Casas et al.

Summary: Plant stress responses are mediated by chemical compounds called exudates released into the rhizosphere. Analyzing root exudates requires appropriate sampling, analytical methodologies, and statistical approaches. Less common biospectroscopy techniques may offer a new perspective in plant metabolomics, while collected data must be tested using various statistical methods to assess biological responses.

Temporal Vegetation Indices and Plant Height from Remotely Sensed Imagery Can Predict Grain Yield and Flowering Time Breeding Value in Maize via Machine Learning Regression

Alper Adak et al.

Summary: Utilizing UAS imagery, this study successfully predicted grain yield and flowering time in elite hybrid maize breeding trials, demonstrating significant improvements in prediction accuracy and reduction in error compared to traditional linear regression methods. Machine learning-based regressions, particularly ridge regression, showed promise in predicting these key traits.
