Permeability of Vesicles for Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids in Aqueous Solution: A Molecular Dynamic Simulation Study

Kun Jiang et al.

Summary: The self-assembly behavior of ionic liquids in aqueous solution was studied through molecular dynamics simulations, revealing the dominant role of interactions between tail groups in stabilizing vesicles and the influence of membrane thickness and alkyl chain arrangement on vesicle permeability. The interdigitated structure of tail groups reduced water exchange rate, while the orientation of the imidazolium ring promoted water molecules approaching hydrophobic regions. These findings suggest the potential for obtaining vesicles with excellent permeability properties by screening the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of ILs for applications in separation and drug delivery processes.

Synergistic aggregation of the ibuprofenate anion and a a double-strand imidazolium cation into vesicles for drug delivery: a simulation study

Tahereh Ghaed-Sharaf et al.

Summary: A novel ionic liquid-based lipid has been studied for drug delivery, showing the formation of stable vesicles as drug carriers in aqueous media through the formation of ion pairs. The addition of monovalent salts enhances the stability of the vesicles, while divalent salts lead to coagulation through complexation with head groups. The solid-like character of the vesicle wall is evidenced by the radial distribution function, indicating synergistic aggregation.

Comparison of the interaction between propranolol hydrochloride (PPL) with anionic surfactant and cationic surface active ionic liquid in micellar phase

Ahmad Bagheri

Summary: In this study, the interaction between an amphiphilic drug and ionic surfactants in binary mixtures was investigated in the micellar phase using conductometric technique. The results showed attractive interactions between components in both systems, with the NLS/PPL system exhibiting stronger micelle formation capability and synergistic effects. Conductometry measurements indicated higher extent of counterion binding in mixed micelles for the SAIL/PPL system compared to the NLS/PPL system.

Ionic Liquid-Based Surfactants: Recent Advances in Their Syntheses, Solution Properties, and Applications

Omar A. El Seoud et al.

Summary: The increasing interest in ionic liquids (ILs) is driven by their favorable properties and diverse applications, especially in the form of ionic liquid-based surfactants (ILBSs). ILBSs show potential in various fields such as catalysis, polymers, and drug delivery, and their use as templates for mesoporous nanoparticles allows for better control over particle properties. ILBSs also form stable water/oil and oil/water microemulsions, which can be utilized in polymerization reactions and other applications.

Temperature- and Composition-Induced Multiarchitectural Transitions in the Catanionic System of a Conventional Surfactant and a Surface-Active Ionic Liquid

Mohd Sajid Lone et al.

Summary: The mixture of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumdodecyl sulfate (bmimDS) has been found to undergo phase transitions from vesicles to micelles as a function of temperature, with some mole fractions of CTAB showing dual transitions. Solutions with certain mole fractions exhibit a single transition from vesicles to cylindrical micelles, while others show dual structural transitions at different temperatures. This unique microstructural transition in a combination of cationic and anionic surfactants without additives has not been reported previously.
