Experimentally Validated Reconstruction and Analysis of a Genome-Scale Metabolic Model of an Anaerobic Neocallimastigomycota Fungus

St. Elmo Wilken et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-quality genome of the anaerobic fungus Neocallimastix lanati, from which the first genome-scale metabolic model of an anaerobic fungus was constructed. The model accurately predicts experimentally validated substrate utilization requirements and metabolic flux predictions were verified. The model sheds light on key aspects of hydrogenosomal metabolism and provides a platform for quantitatively studying these important but poorly understood early-branching fungi.

The Present Role and New Potentials of Anaerobic Fungi in Ruminant Nutrition

Thomas Hartinger et al.

Summary: The ruminal microbiota plays a crucial role in fiber degradation in ruminants, with anaerobic fungi being important but often overlooked. Current research suggests that anaerobic fungi can be used as direct-fed microbials to enhance ruminal fiber degradation and reduce methane emissions, although challenges in large-scale cultivation and application methods need to be addressed for potential improvements in animal performance.

The Anaerobic Fungi: Challenges and Opportunities for Industrial Lignocellulosic Biofuel Production

Luke M. G. Saye et al.

Summary: Lignocellulose is a promising feedstock for biofuel production, but pretreatments are needed to overcome its natural recalcitrance. Anaerobic fungi have potential for biofuel production due to their effective ability to hydrolyse lignocellulose and convert it to H-2 and ethanol, as well as produce volatile fatty acid precursors for further conversion.

A SWEET surprise: Anaerobic fungal sugar transporters and chimeras enhance sugar uptake in yeast

Igor A. Podolsky et al.

Summary: The study identified a novel fungal SWEET transporter, NcSWEET1, from anaerobic fungi that can enhance glucose and xylose co-utilization. By constructing single cross-over chimeras and studying protein structure and function, enhanced variants were identified, offering potential applications in improving sugar transport efficiency.

Summary: The Transporter Classification Database (TCDB) is a freely accessible reference resource providing comprehensive information about transporters from various organisms, and is the only transport protein classification database adopted by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The database has seen a significant increase in proteins and transport systems since its last update in 2016, with new features including a chemical ontology for substrates, new superfamilies, and novel subclasses of transport systems.
