Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Signaling in Depression and Antidepressant Action

Eero Castren et al.

Summary: Neurotrophic factors, especially BDNF, are associated with depression and the action of antidepressant drugs, with impaired BDNF signaling linked to mood disorders. Increased BDNF expression and signaling have been linked to the mechanisms of antidepressant drugs, and BDNF regulates various types of neuronal plasticities in the brain, which are connected to antidepressant action. The hypothesis of a connection between neurotrophic factors and neuronal plasticity with mood disorders and antidepressant action has been further supported by recent evidence.

Brain stimulation effects on serum BDNF, VEGF, and TNFα in treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders

Giedre Valiuliene et al.

Summary: Resistance to pharmacological treatment poses challenges for psychiatry, and brain stimulation techniques are often used as alternative treatments. This study analyzed the impact of neurotrophic and inflammatory factors on treatment-resistant psychiatric patients, finding that different brain stimulation therapies have varying effects on BDNF and TNF alpha concentrations.

Therapeutic Potentials of Ketamine and Esketamine in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and Eating Disorders (ED): A Review of the Current Literature

Giovanni Martinotti et al.

Summary: The obsessive-compulsive spectrum encompasses disorders with similar core features, such as obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, and anxiety. Ketamine has shown remarkable results in treating depression, PTSD, and OCD, but its efficacy in SUD and ED remains uncertain. Further studies are needed to clarify its potential in these conditions.
