Tuning of halogen-bond strength: Comparative role of basicity and strength of σ-hole

Summary: Theoretical study on N···Cl halogen bonded complexes between halomethanes and ammonia derivatives shows that the binding energy correlates with the positive electrostatic potential on the Cl atom and the proton affinity of the N-bases. The strength of the sigma-hole is more important than the electron donor's basicity in determining the electrostatic interaction energy in these complexes.
