Does infant formula containing synbiotics support adequate growth in infants? A meta-analysis and systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Parisa Janmohammadi et al.

Summary: Several studies have suggested that formulas containing synbiotics (composed of prebiotics and probiotics) may have a positive effect on anthropometric indices. However, the results of these studies are inconsistent. This meta-analysis found that the consumption of formulas containing synbiotics did not significantly affect the growth of healthy infants.

Fermented infant formula (with Bifidobacterium breve C50 and Streptococcus thermophilus O65) with prebiotic oligosaccharides is safe and modulates the gut microbiota towards a microbiota closer to that of breastfed infants

Laurent Beghin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the addition of new bioactive compounds and prebiotics in infant formula can improve microbiota composition, increase SIgA concentration, and bring the metabolic activity of the microbiome closer to that of breastfed infants. All tested formulas were associated with normal growth and good tolerance in infants.

Developmental effects on sleep-wake patterns in infants receiving a cow's milk-based infant formula with an added prebiotic blend: a Randomized Controlled Trial

John Colombo et al.

Summary: Results suggest that infants receiving prebiotics showed faster consolidation of daytime waking state, supporting the use of home-based actigraphy for assessing early sleep-wake patterns. The prebiotic effect on wake organization is consistent with influence on the gut-brain axis and warrants further investigation.

Recent advance in infant nutrition: Human milk oligosaccharides

Yu-Jyun Cheng et al.

Summary: Breastfeeding and human milk are considered the best for infant nutrition. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) have various beneficial effects on infants' health and their composition is influenced by factors like lactation stage and maternal genetics. While HMOs supplemented infant formulae are well-tolerated, further clinical studies are needed to fully understand their significance in infant nutrition.

Effects of Infant Formula Supplemented With Prebiotics and OPO on Infancy Fecal Microbiota: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial

Bingquan Zhu et al.

Summary: By comparing the effects of different formula additives on infant fecal microbiota, it was found that formula supplemented with prebiotics and 1,3-olein-2-palmitin (OPO) helped maintain the diversity and some composition of the gut microbiota similar to breastfeeding. The supplemented formula group showed closer resemblance to breastfeeding in terms of gut microbiota diversity and certain metabolisms compared to the standard formula group.
