Association of physical activity and nutrition with telomere length, a marker of cellular aging: A comprehensive review

Bartu Eren Gunesliol et al.

Summary: The aging of the population leads to a loss of ability to move independently, and the length of telomeres is associated with cell aging and death. Physical activity and nutrition can affect telomere length and slow down the aging process.

Vegetarian diet and the risk of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

Mohammadreza Askari et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the association between a vegetarian diet and mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and stress. The results from 13 publications were analyzed, including four cohort studies and nine cross-sectional studies. The findings suggest that there is no significant association between a vegetarian diet and depression or anxiety. However, due to insufficient data, the relationship with stress could not be determined. Further cohort studies are needed to explore the effects of a vegetarian diet on mental health outcomes.

Vegetarian diet is inversely associated with prevalence of depression in middle-older aged South Asians in the United States

Summary: The study found a 43% lower odds of depression among vegetarians in the South Asian population in the United States. Longitudinal examinations are needed to confirm these findings.

Dietary Modulation of Oxidative Stress From Edible Insects: A Mini-Review

Veronica D'Antonio et al.

Summary: Edible insects are considered a nutritious and environmentally sustainable alternative to animal proteins. Studies have found that edible insects have antioxidant properties, which can help counteract oxidative stress and reduce the formation of oxidation damage markers. Further research is needed to assess the efficacy of edible insect consumption in modulating redox status in humans.

Growth, body composition, and cardiovascular and nutritional risk of 5 to 10-y-old children consuming vegetarian, vegan, or omnivore diets

Malgorzata A. Desmond et al.

Summary: Plant-based diets, particularly vegan diets, show potential benefits for cardiovascular health in children, but may also lead to nutritional deficiencies and lower bone mineral content. Vegetarian children have a less favorable cardiometabolic risk profile compared to omnivores. Further research is needed to optimize the benefits of plant-based diets in children.

Collection and storage of human white blood cells for analysis of DNA damage and repair activity using the comet assay in molecular epidemiology studies

Peter Moller et al.

Summary: The study discusses the use of cryopreserved blood samples in analyzing DNA damage and repair activity, showing that various types of blood samples can be cryopreserved with minimal effect on DNA damage levels. While whole blood and peripheral blood mononuclear cells can be cryopreserved for several years without much impact, caution should be taken when cryopreserving whole blood and buffy coat samples. The article also provides detailed protocols for cryopreserving PBMCs, BCs, and WB samples.

Vegetarian Diet: An Overview through the Perspective of Quality of Life Domains

Shila Minari Hargreaves et al.

Summary: Vegetarianism has been gaining visibility and its effects on health are well-known, but its influence on the quality of life of individuals needs further investigation. Adopting a vegetarian diet may have positive outcomes such as improved physical health and moral satisfaction, but it could also be negatively impacted by factors like environment, social/cultural group, and economic aspects.

DNA damage in circulating leukocytes measured with the comet assay may predict the risk of death

Stefano Bonassi et al.

Summary: The comet assay, a common method for measuring strand breaks and other DNA lesions, was used in a study to assess the impact of DNA damage on overall mortality and disease risk. The results showed that individuals with high levels of DNA damage had a significantly higher overall mortality and risk of circulatory system diseases. These findings support the use of the comet assay in preventative strategies for non-communicable diseases.

Summary: Vegetarians had significantly lower levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, but higher levels of diastolic blood pressure. There were no significant differences in other risk factors between the two diet groups. The high percentage of abnormal cholesterol levels in both groups underscores the importance of lifestyle changes.
