Whole-cell bioreporters for evaluating petroleum hydrocarbon contamination

Bo Jiang et al.

Summary: Whole-cell bioreporters (WCBs) are biological tools that use living microorganisms to sense chemicals by producing quantifiable signals. This paper reviews the concept and recent progress in constructing and applying WCBs for sensing petroleum hydrocarbons, addressing key challenges in improving sensitivity and detection limits. The discussion also highlights factors influencing bioreporter performance in environmental samples and suggests solutions for overcoming these barriers.
