Single-atom Pt promoted Mo2C for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction

Shanshan Niu et al.

Summary: A new low-Pt electrocatalyst with Pt single atoms dispersed into Mo2C nanocrystals in a 3D porous carbon matrix was synthesized, exhibiting significantly enhanced activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1 M KOH compared to the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. The improved activity is attributed to the electronic interaction between Pt single atoms and Mo2C surface, which enhances water activation and hydrogen adsorption.

Combination of Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation with Selective Oxygenation of Organic Substrates using Manganese Borophosphates

Prashanth W. Menezes et al.

Summary: Efforts in developing artificial manganese-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction have been hindered by unsatisfactory catalytic performance and poor stability. However, a new class of materials, helical manganese borophosphates, has shown uniquely high catalytic activity and durability in alkaline media, achieving the highest efficiency reported to date. This is attributed to their unexpected surface transformation into an amorphous MnOx phase with birnessite-like short-range order and surface-stabilized Mn-III sites under extended electrical bias, as demonstrated by various spectroscopy methods.

Strategies and Perspectives to Catch the Missing Pieces in Energy-Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Media

Sengeni Anantharaj et al.

Summary: Transition metal hydroxides and their heterostructures have been identified as highly active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline water electrolysis. The lattice hydroxide anions in metal hydroxides enhance the catalytic activity, but their poor electronic conductivity has been a concern. Advancements in heterostructured hydroxide materials with metallic and/or semiconducting phases have overcome this limitation, making them essential for energy-efficient alkaline HER.

Summary: This study reveals that the activity of graphene-based Co single-atom catalysts towards hydrogen evolution reaction is attributed to their edge sites, and edge-rich Co single atoms were synthesized based on theoretical results. By applying supervised learning techniques, the measured synchrotron spectrum of Co single atoms was interpreted, showing consistent local environments with Athena fitting. Moreover, the edge-rich Co single-atom catalysts exhibit better electrocatalytic performance than commercial Pt/C at high current density, indicating the potential for rational design and structural analysis of nanocatalysts.
