Flame retarding and smoke suppressing mechanisms of nano composite flame retardants on bitumen and bituminous mixture

Wenjing Xia et al.

Summary: The developed NCFR effectively inhibits the combustion behaviors of bitumen and bituminous mixture, forming a more compact and stable char residue. NCFR also reduces smoke release amount and mass loss rate, playing the roles of flame retarding and smoke suppressing effects, thus improving the fire safety of bituminous materials.

Inhibitory effects of developed composite flame retardant on bituminous combustion and volatile emissions

Wenjing Xia et al.

Summary: The study confirmed new compositional formulation proportions for a sustainable and efficient composite flame retardant (CFR) of bituminous materials. The inhibitory effects of CFR on the non-isothermal combustion kinetics characteristics of bitumen were discussed, showing comprehensive and synergistic flame retarding effects due to dilution, cooling, and insulation. Additionally, the CFR efficiently suppressed the dynamic release process of various volatile constituents during bituminous combustion, providing an efficient and green flame retardant for bituminous materials when exposed to a fire.
