Hybrid Carbon Microfibers-Graphite Fillers for Piezoresistive Cementitious Composites

Hasan Borke Birgin et al.

Summary: Multifunctional structural materials show great promise in engineering, with particular attention to their strain sensing abilities. By utilizing a new hybrid carbon doping approach, the performance of graphite as a strain sensing filler is improved, resulting in faster percolation and enhanced sensitivity, demonstrating superior performance.

Summary: Intrinsic self-sensing cement-based structures or sensors show great potential for structural health monitoring applications by incorporating conductive fillers. This study investigated the mechanical, electrical, and piezoresistive properties of cementitious composites with various fillers, showing that ACP and nano ZnO can improve the composites' performance. The composites containing ACP and nano ZnO exhibit favorable mechanical properties and piezoresistive behavior, with ACP at 2 wt% showing the best sensitivity and linearity.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of GNP and GP on physicochemical, mechanical, and piezoresistive properties of cementitious composites. The addition of GNP and GP accelerated cement hydration and affected the electrical resistivity and mechanical strength of the composites. GNP showed advantages in enhancing mechanical strength and piezoresistivity, while GP did not exhibit percolation and led to irreversible resistivity under cyclic compression.
