Modeling the similarity and the potential of toluene and moisture buffering capacities of hemp concrete on IAQ and thermal comfort

Anh Dung Tran Le et al.

Summary: The study highlights the relationship between water vapor and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in porous building materials, establishing a clear similarity in transport and storage coefficients. A coupled hygric-pollutant (VOC) model is presented for simulating VOC and hygric behavior of building materials, validated and applied to study the impact of toluene and moisture buffering capacities in hemp concrete walls on indoor conditions. The numerical model is useful for building design optimization and estimating indoor pollution and hygrothermal conditions rapidly.

Relationship between hygrothermal and acoustical behavior of hemp and sunflower composites

Mohamed Said Abbas et al.

Summary: This article investigates the relationships between hygrothermal and acoustical parameters of bio-based porous materials, providing a method for indirect characterization of material properties through acoustical measurements. By estimating thermal conductivity and water vapor permeability from acoustical measurements, the study aims to accelerate the development of sustainable construction materials and better understand the complex hygrothermal behavior of such materials.

Hygrothermal and Mechanical Behaviors of Fiber Mortar: Comparative Study between Palm and Hemp Fibers

Younes Zouaoui et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the hygrothermal and mechanical properties of innovative mortar mixtures reinforced with natural fibers. The fibers from palm stems and hemp were treated to reduce water absorption and enhance moisture buffering capacity. The mortar mixtures incorporating these fibers showed low thermal conductivity, excellent moisture buffering capacity, high porosity, and low compressive strength. The developed materials are intended for thermal insulation and building filling, with a focus on low environmental impact.

Accelerated Aging Effects on the Hygrothermal Behaviour of Hemp Concrete: Experimental and Numerical Investigations

Ferhat Benmahiddine et al.

Summary: This article investigated the durability of hemp concrete through both numerical and experimental methods. Aging led to microstructural changes impacting heat and mass transfer properties. Numerical simulation revealed significant discrepancies in relative humidity values and phase shifts after aging, while temperature values showed minor deviations.

Effect of the state of conservation of the hemp used in geopolymer and hydraulic lime concretes

M. Paz Saez-Perez et al.

Summary: This study evaluates two types of concrete with hemp fibers as natural aggregates, prepared with inorganic binders and involving reactions (Si-Na) and (Si-Ca). Results show that wet preservation of hemp can improve the properties of concrete, equivalent to other pretreatments. The dosages used in the study provided high quality concretes.

Microscopic estimation of swelling and shrinkage of hemp concrete in response to relative humidity variations

Aya Rima et al.

Summary: The use of bio-based building materials such as hemp concrete has increased in France in recent years due to its hygrothermal and acoustic advantages. This study focuses on analyzing the 2D microstructure of hemp concrete and hemp shiv aggregates to understand and estimate dimensional variations during sorption and desorption cycles. The research highlights the significant impact of relative humidity on hemp concrete and the need to consider dimensional variations when modeling its hygrothermal behavior.
