Characterization of roughness and shear behavior of thermally treated granite fractures

Fanzhen Meng et al.

Summary: Despite various studies on the effects of high temperature on rock properties, this research focuses on the impact of high temperature on the frictional behavior of rough fractures in granite. The study found that heating affected the UCS, Vp, roughness, and shear behavior of the rock samples, with changes attributed to thermal expansion, water evaporation, and increased thermal cracks. Additionally, shear strength and post-peak stress drop were influenced by treatment temperatures above 300 degrees C.

Mechanical characteristics and failure modes for mode-I sandstone and rock-like cracked sample exposed to freeze thawing cycle

Tielin Han et al.

Summary: In the study of rocks in cold regions, the mechanical characteristics of rock mass deformation failure and its behavior in actual environment are important subjects. The research found that with increasing freeze thawing cycles, the mechanical parameters of the sandstone deteriorated gradually. Additionally, the crack angle of inclinations had an influence on the deterioration damage of mechanical parameters.

Deformation and failure behaviours of rock-concrete interfaces with natural morphology under shear testing

Quan Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper focused on the effects of concrete wall strength and normal stress on the unbonding performances of sandstone-concrete interface. Through a series of shear tests, three primary outcomes were obtained, and an improved rock-concrete shear strength formula was proposed to more accurately estimate the shear strength of rock concrete interfaces in geotechnical engineering.

Sandstone-concrete interface debonding mechanism under freeze-thaw actions: Fracture process and fracture criterion

Zihan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study focused on the fracture debonding law and fracture criterion for rock-concrete binary composite interfaces under freeze-thaw (F-T) actions, using sandstone-concrete binary composite materials as the research object. It was found that the interface influence zone (IIZ) lies in the sandstone near the interface, and the interface crack tends to initiate and propagate mainly along the interface under F-T cycles. The study also discussed the initiation law and influencing factors of interface cracks under F-T actions.

Investigations on fracture properties and analytical solutions of fracture parameters at rock-concrete interface

Wenyan Yuan et al.

Summary: The study found that the roughness degree of the rock-concrete interface significantly affects its fracture properties. As the roughness degree increases, the fracture energy, critical crack length, and double-K fracture parameters show obvious increasing tendencies, while the ratio of the unstable fracture toughness of the rock-concrete interface to concrete is much less than that of the initial fracture toughness, indicating a weaker cohesive effect compared with concrete.

An experimental and analytical study of rate-dependent shear behaviour of rough joints

Hua Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the shear behavior of rough joints is important in rock engineering, especially under dynamic loadings. This study investigated joint shear behavior at different shear rates and developed a rate-dependent constitutive model. The findings suggest that the shear strength of joints varies with roughness and shear rate, with a proposed viscous joint model showing promise in describing shear stiffness evolution.

Cracking Processes and Failure Modes of Rock-Like Specimens with a Set of Non-persistent Joints

Jiaqi Guo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the cracking process and failure mode of rock mass with different joint inclination angles and rock bridge lengths through laboratory experiments and numerical modeling. It was found that greater rock bridge lengths strengthened tension effects and mitigated shear effects on specimen failure, resulting in a variety of failure modes observed in the specimens.
