pixy: Unbiased estimation of nucleotide diversity and divergence in the presence of missing data

Katharine L. Korunes et al.

Summary: Population genetic analyses often use summary statistics such as pi and d(XY) to describe genetic variation patterns. However, biases can be introduced due to missing data, which can lead to underestimation of genetic diversity within and between populations. In this study, a user-friendly UNIX command line utility, pixy, is introduced to address this issue and provide unbiased estimates of pi and d(XY) regardless of the amount or form of missing data.

Phylogeny, species delimitation and population structure of the steppe-inhabiting land snail genus Helicopsis in Eastern Europe

Igor A. Balashov et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the subdivision of Helicopsis populations in Eastern Europe reflects the geographical subdivision of the European steppe belt, with deeper subdivision within the genus compared to other steppe-inhabiting groups. Populations from the Pontic steppes can be classified into two sister-species, with H. lunulata dominant in the west and H. filimargo dominant in the east.

Whole-genome re-sequencing data to infer historical demography and speciation processes in land snails: the study of two Candidula sister species

Luis J. Chueca et al.

Summary: This study combined whole-genome re-sequencing and population genomics to evaluate the historical demography and speciation process of two closely related land snail species. Results suggested that the speciation between species involves both gene flow and ecological speciation processes, and further research based on whole-genome data can provide valuable understanding on species divergence.

On the notions of taxonomic 'impediment', 'gap', 'inflation' and 'anarchy', and their effects on the field of conservation

Marcos A. Raposo et al.

Summary: This article examines the increasingly prevalent taxonomic notions of 'impediment', 'gap', 'inflation' and 'anarchy' in discussions of the global biodiversity crisis, highlighting a philosophical deficiency in the comprehension of taxonomic principles. The importance of constructing a theoretical bridge between taxonomy and conservation biology is emphasized, along with the need for refining concepts surrounding diversity estimates and species extinction in a fluid world of knowledge.
