Explicit incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics in a multi-GPU environment for large-scale simulations

Daniel Morikawa et al.

Summary: This study introduces an explicit incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics formulation with stabilized pressure distribution in a multiple GPU environment, stabilizing the pressure Poisson equation via pressure invariance and divergence-free conditions. The method allows simulations with a large number of particles and shows its potential in simulating natural disasters like the Fukushima Dai-ichi Power Plant inundation. The computational performance is notably high in a multi-GPU environment with reasonable speedup values.

A coupled incompressible SPH-Hamiltonian SPH solver for hydroelastic FSI corresponding to composite structures

Abbas Khayyer et al.

Summary: This paper presents a fully Lagrangian meshfree projection-based hydroelastic FSI solver within the SPH framework for simulating incompressible fluid flows interacting with laminated composite elastic structures. The solver utilizes an enhanced version of Incompressible SPH for fluids and a structure model in the context of Hamiltonian SPH for laminated composite elastic structures. The solver demonstrates superior performance without artificial stabilizers or smoothing of material properties at material interfaces, and its potential applicability for practical engineering applications is highlighted through challenging simulations.

A multi-resolution SPH method for fluid-structure interactions

Chi Zhang et al.

Summary: The multi resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics method presented in this paper models fluid-structure interaction problems by utilizing different smoothing lengths and time steps for fluid and structure discretization. A position-based Verlet time integration scheme is introduced to ensure momentum conservation at the fluid-structure coupling. The introduction of time-averaged velocity and acceleration for solid particles enhances force matching in the fluid and solid equations, demonstrating efficiency, accuracy, and robustness in numerical examples, including bio-mechanical problems.

Numerical investigation of the mechanism of granular flow impact on rigid control structures

Edward Yang et al.

Summary: The study suggests that when designing baffles arrays to maximize flow deceleration, the height of the baffles should reach a minimum critical value quantifiable from the flow depth without baffles. Check-dam systems are more effective in reducing run-out distances, but experience higher forces compared to baffles. Flow-control structures leading to shorter run-out distances are associated with lower total energy dissipation, faster kinetic energy dissipation, and lower downstream peak flow rates in granular flows.

Fluid-rigid-body interaction simulations and validations using a coupled stabilized ISPH-DEM incorporated with the energy-tracking impulse method for multiple-body contacts

Mitsuteru Asai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel particle-based fluid-rigid-body interaction simulator for violent free-surface flow problems. It uses the incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH) method to accurately model the pressure distribution of free-surface fluid flow. The energy-tracking impulse (ETI) method is incorporated to handle contact accurately, providing better energy conservation and stability.

Multi-resolution ISPH-SPH for accurate and efficient simulation of hydroelastic fluid-structure interactions in ocean engineering

Abbas Khayyer et al.

Summary: A multi-resolution fully Lagrangian meshfree hydroelastic FSI solver based on SPH has been developed for accurate and adaptive reproductions of ocean engineering problems. The solver includes a consistent fluid-structure coupling scheme and a novel multi-resolution scheme incorporating a common influence length, a modified SPH density definition and a SPH-based formulated SPP scheme to achieve precise satisfaction of fluid-structure interface boundary conditions and accurate volume conservation at the interface. Validation includes reproductions of classical and ocean engineering benchmark tests, with comparisons made to other FSI solvers.
