Molecular diversity of Staphylococcus aureus and the role of milking equipment adherences or biofilm as a source for bulk tank milk contamination

P. A. Pacha et al.

Summary: This study assessed the strain diversity of 166 Staph. aureus isolates collected from 3 consecutive bulk tank milk samples and from milking equipment in contact with milk from 23 Chilean dairy farms. The analysis revealed highly heterogeneous strain diversity among dairy farms, with certain farms showing a clonal distribution of Staph. aureus strains between milking equipment and bulk tank milk. The findings suggest that Staph. aureus-containing milking equipment may be a potential source of contamination for bulk tank milk, impacting milk quality.
