Summary: Microwaves are commonly used for telecommunications, navigation and food processing, as well as in fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Low-power microwave techniques are suitable for quality checks, strain sensing, and damage inspection, while high-power microwave energy can be used for heating and curing, offering advantages such as volumetric heating, reduced processing time, and energy saving.

Effect of lay-up configuration on the microwave absorption properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite materials

Jing Zhou et al.

Summary: The microwave response of multidirectional CFRP laminates is influenced by fiber orientation, laminate thickness, and positioning of internal cross-ply. When carbon fibers are parallel to the incident electric field, the material reflects microwave power, while other configurations can result in either reflection or absorption depending on the impedance matching with air.

Summary: The ability of microwave radiation to penetrate and interact directly with materials has led to its extensive use in food and drug industries, and more recently in composites manufacturing. The study develops a fully-coupled finite-element model to understand the distribution of electromagnetic energy in carbon fiber composites under different heating process parameters. The results show significant differences in electromagnetic field distribution at frequencies above 1 GHz compared to lower frequencies, resulting in non-uniform heating.
