Resolving the porosity-unmelted inclusion dilemma during in-situ alloying of Ti34Nb via laser powder bed fusion

Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of laser power, velocity, and profile on the porosity, inclusion content, and microstructural evolution of in-situ alloyed laser powder bed fusion manufactured Ti34Nb. It found that a specific combination of laser profile, power, velocity, and scanning strategy could result in the formation of an ideal microstructure.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of in-situ Ti6Al4V-TiB composites manufactured by selective laser melting

Zhiguang Zhou et al.

Summary: In situ TiB reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated via selective laser melting, with optimized processing to achieve crack-free and fully dense composites. The distribution of TiB reinforcement in the composites was mainly in the form of whisker clusters, showing different distributions in TMC1 and TMC2. The improvement in mechanical properties of the composites was attributed to Hall-Petch strengthening and load-bearing transformation strengthening.

Revisiting ω phase embrittlement in metastable β titanium alloys: Role of elemental partitioning

M. J. Lai et al.

Summary: In Ti-12Mo alloy, rejection of Mo element from omega phase particles leads to intense plastic flow localization and crack nucleation, causing embrittlement, which occurs as early as 10 minutes of aging at 400 degrees Celsius.

Embedding boron into Ti powder for direct laser deposited titanium matrix composite: Microstructure evolution and the role of nano-TiB network structure

Minhan Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, titanium powder embedded with TiB was fabricated in-situ by gas atomization and used for direct laser deposited titanium matrix composites. The addition of boron had a positive effect on grain refinement and strength enhancement, while the TiB network structure also contributed to the improvement of strength. Additionally, the network structure played a crucial role in limiting plastic deformation, crack deflection, and blunting, highlighting its significance in composite materials.

Columnar to equiaxed grain transition of laser deposited Ti6Al4V using nano-sized B4C particles

Xin Meng et al.

Summary: A new laser melting deposition (LMD) method was employed to stimulate the columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) in Ti6Al4V by adding 1-5 wt% nano-sized B4C particles. The addition of B4C resulted in refined grains and the production of TiB and TiC reinforcements, leading to increased strength and ductility in the material. The CET mechanism with successive layer-upon-layer deposition was also analyzed.

In-situ alloying in laser-based additive manufacturing processes: A critical review

Mohammad Hossein Mosallanejad et al.

Summary: The current challenge in additive manufacturing lies in the availability and cost of feedstock, with a growing number of studies focusing on in-situ alloying using elemental blends rather than pre-alloyed powders. This strategy provides greater flexibility to additive manufacturing methods, paving the way towards meeting the industry's evolving needs.
