A novel synthesis of lightweight and high-strength green geopolymer foamed material by rice husk ash and ground-granulated blast-furnace slag

Guangwei Liang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the preparation and characterization of alkali-activated slag based geopolymer foamed material (GFM) with the addition of rice husk ash (RHA). The inclusion of RHA improves thermal stability, thermal insulation, compressive strength, and specific compressive strength of GFM, leading to lightweight high-strength developments. Furthermore, replacing GGBS with RHA effectively mitigates strength degradation, reduces weight loss, and enhances volumetric stability during thermal exposure.

Improving the carbonation resistance of Na2CO3-activated slag mixes via the use of reactive MgO and nucleation seeding

N. T. Dung et al.

Summary: This study explored the enhanced carbonation resistance of Na2CO3-activated slag (SCAS) concrete through the addition of hydromagnesite seeds (S) and reactive MgO (M). The presence of these additives led to the conversion of MgO into hydrated magnesium carbonates (HMCs) and the formation of hydrotalcite, which contributed to denser microstructures and improved compressive strength. Overall, the inclusion of S and M enabled the retention of hydration products, formation of additional carbonation products, and a significant increase in compressive strength after carbonation.

Investigation on the roles of solution-based alkali and silica in activated low-calcium fly ash and slag blends

K. Chiranjeevi Reddy et al.

Summary: The addition of silica in alkaline activating solution delays the primary hydration of slag while promoting the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) in activated binder. The reactivity of silica depends on the SiO2/Na2O ratio in the activating solution, with a higher Na content favoring a more reactive form of silica. The incorporation of silica in CASH scales with the silica content in the activating solution, leading to enhanced compressive strength. The form of silica has negligible effect on the dissolution of fly ash in the binder and ultimate strength achieved.

Summary: The addition of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) as internal curing agent can significantly reduce the autogenous shrinkage of alkali activated slag (AAS) pastes and promote the formation of C-A-S-H gels and hydrotalcite-like phases. However, the addition of SAP also increases the capillary pore size and pore volume of the pastes, leading to a decrease in compressive strength.

Insights to the sulfate resistance and microstructures of alkali-activated metakaolin/slag pastes

Huajun Zhu et al.

Summary: Substitution of metakaolin with slag increased precursor reactivity, leading to higher reaction rates and improved mechanical properties and sulfate resistance in alkaliactivated cement. The development of gel phases and pore structures, as well as the generation of C-A-S-H, contribute to the better sulfate resistance and more compact microstructure observed with higher slag content. An optimal replacement level of 30 wt% metakaolin was identified for improved sulfate resistance and prevention of potential ettringite damage in practical applications.

Chemo-mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag/fly ash paste incorporating white mud

Renjuan Sun et al.

Summary: The study examined the feasibility of incorporating white mud into a blended slag/fly ash alkali activated binder system, finding that compressive strength decreases with increasing white mud content, but the paste containing 50% white mud is still comparable to Portland cement 42.5. Additionally, XRD, TGA, FTIR, SEM/EDX tests were performed to analyze the reaction products, showing that the main reaction product is a C-(N)-A-S-H type gel and that the formation of hydrotalcite is promoted with an increase in white mud replacement. Nanoindentation revealed a shift towards lower values in both elastic modulus and hardness with the addition of white mud.

Fundamental understanding of the setting behaviour of the alkali activated binders based on ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash

Aparna Sai Surya Sree Nedunuri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the setting of alkali activated ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash mixtures by analyzing the mechanical and chemical evolution of the structure during early ages. The quick setting of slag mixtures was found to be due to rapid coagulation and rigidification of the network with the formation of hydration products, while the setting in OPC systems is attributed to a network formed by partially hydrated or anhydrous cement particles. The proportion of fly ash and molar modulus of the activator were found to significantly affect the setting time of the alkali activated binders.
