Original Effect of PAN-based and pitch-based carbon fibres on microstructure and properties of continuous Cf/ZrB2-SiC UHTCMCs

D. Sciti et al.

Summary: The microstructure and mechanical properties of two different Cf/ZrB2-SiC composites reinforced with continuous PyC coated PAN-derived fibers or uncoated pitch-derived fibers were compared. It was found that coated PAN-derived fibers provided higher strengths and damage tolerance due to a higher degree of fiber pull-out, but also resulted in a less homogeneous microstructure. On the other hand, the weaker fiber/matrix interface in coated bundles led to lower interlaminar shear, off-axis strength, and ablation resistance compared to uncoated pitch-derived fibers.

Insight into microstructure and flexural strength of ultra-high temperature ceramics enriched SICARBON™ composite

Pietro Galizia et al.

Summary: Research on Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) aims to enhance operating temperature in oxidizing environments by incorporating Ultra-High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC) phases into the matrix. This study evaluates the effect of span length and specimen orientation on the flexural strength of UHTC-enriched SICARBON (TM) material and introduces a tilted configuration to obtain valid flexural strength even with small specimens. Additionally, virtual microstructure generation and extension of the Tsai-Wu failure criterion are used to assess direction-dependent failure indices for different lay-up configurations.
