Assessing effective properties of continuous carbon fiber-reinforced composites with the preset cracks

Jiale Xi et al.

Summary: This article introduces a parametric microscopic model with preset cracks for evaluating the influence of initial damages on the mechanical properties of composites. The effectiveness of the method is assessed by comparing local stress distributions and effective modulus with other numerical methods, and the relationships between crack evolution and microscopic stress field are discussed in details. It is found that the maximum stress at the crack tip varies differently with crack evolution in fiber or matrix materials.

Characterisation of damage evolution in plain weave SiC/SiC composites using in situ X-ray micro-computed tomography

Daxu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructures and tensile damage evolution of plain weave SiC fibre reinforced SiC matrix composites using X-ray computed tomography. The study reveals the initiation and evolution of material damages using deep-learning-based image segmentation. Results show that longitudinal matrix cracking is more severe than transverse cracking, and the lengths of fibre pull-outs at the fracture surface of fibre tows vary widely.

Microscale intrinsic properties of hybrid unidirectional/woven composite laminates: Part I experimental tests

Junjie Ye et al.

Summary: This research utilizes a combination of micro-CT and SEM techniques to study the microstructures and failure mechanisms of a hybrid unidirectional/woven composite laminate. The study reveals matrix damage in both woven and unidirectional laminae, as well as distinct delamination between the UD laminae and the woven composites. The potential of combining micro-CT with SEM in investigating local damage and intrinsic failure mechanisms in HUWCLs at microscale is demonstrated.
