Creep and Residual Properties of Filament-Wound Composite Rings under Radial Compression in Harsh Environments

Frederico Eggers et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the viscoelastic response and residual properties of carbon/epoxy filament-wound composite rings under compressive loading in harsh environments. Results indicate that creep displacement is influenced by both hygrothermal and mechanical conditions, with a greater impact at higher temperatures. Creep generates permanent damage in the cylinders.

Experimental study on the effect of hygrothermal environments combined with the sustained mechanical loads on the strength of composite rings

Roham Rafiee et al.

Summary: The study shows that the performance of composite pipes is significantly affected by hygrothermal conditions, with different moisture uptake behaviors observed at low and high temperatures. The type of moisture absorption behavior was not significantly influenced by the applied preload. Applying hygrothermal and strain corrosion conditions resulted in a decrease in Hoop Tensile Strength of the samples, as seen in SEM images showing decreased bonding between fibers and matrix.

Experimental and analytical investigations of the flexural behavior of hollow ±55° filament wound GFRP tubes

Dillon Betts et al.

Summary: The behavior of +/- 55 degrees filament wound glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) tubes under flexural loading was examined experimentally and analytically. The tubes exhibited a nonlinear load-deflection response and a similar failure mechanism, with moment capacity increasing with tube diameter and pressure rating. An iterative analytical technique accurately predicted the behavior of the tubes and was used to establish a simple design equation for moment capacity.

The effects of back-up on drilling machinability of filament wound GFRP composite pipes: Mechanical characterization and drilling tests

Sakir Yazman

Summary: The filament winding (FW) method is preferred in manufacturing high-pressure vessels, pressure pipelines, and construction components. Drilling-induced damages negatively affect the mechanical properties of composite pipes during service, highlighting the importance of determining optimum cutting parameters and a suitable back-up material. Using a back-up material in drilling composite pipes reduces delamination, borehole damages, and surface roughness, while also preventing the propagation of interlaminar cracks around the hole.
