New concept of carbon fiber reinforced composite 3D auxetic lattice structures based on stretching-dominated cells

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new concept of 3D auxetic lattice structures with high stiffness and explores a method for rapidly fabricating them. Theoretical models are developed to predict the homogenized elastic properties of the structures, and the directional dependence of these properties is investigated in detail. Experimental and numerical analysis confirm that the structures are suitable for uniaxial loading and exhibit excellent load bearing capacity and negative Poisson's ratio effects. Efforts to promote the wider use of these structures in various applications are emphasized.

Lightweight weft-knitted tubular lattice composite for energy absorption applications: An experimental and numerical study

Mahdi Hajjari et al.

Summary: A lightweight lattice composite tube with hexagonal unit cells was produced using a textile-based method, showing comparable energy absorption properties to expanded metal tubes. Finite element simulations provided insight into the failure mechanism of the structure for predicting energy absorption behavior. Further improvement in performance was possible by controlling global buckling and using polyurethane foam injection into the tube.
