The Atlantic salmon whole blood transcriptome and how it relates to major locus maturation genotypes and other tissues

Samuel C. Andrew et al.

Summary: This study constructed a transcriptome for Atlantic salmon whole blood using RNA-seq and identified transcriptomic proxies for the major maturation timing gene vgll3. Differentially expressed genes related to early and late maturing genotypes were associated with ribosomal subunit genes. Comparing the blood transcriptome to reference transcriptomes of other tissues, it was found that the blood transcriptome was unique compared to other tissues' transcription profiles.

High Throughput Sequencing of MicroRNA in Rainbow Trout Plasma, Mucus, and Surrounding Water Following Acute Stress

Summary: This study identified altered plasma miRNAs in response to acute stress in rainbow trout, as well as changes in miRNAs in fish epidermal mucus and surrounding water. The expression profiles of miRNAs in mucus and water were different from those in plasma, indicating that the plasma miRNA response was not associated with external samples.

Summary: Molecular techniques are increasingly used in conservation physiology to understand how wild organisms respond to stressors. This study developed a gill transcriptome for walleye and found that fish confined in the Delta Marsh may exhibit sub-lethal responses to high temperature and low oxygen conditions. The results provide valuable information for conservation management and highlight the usefulness of pairing transcriptomic techniques with multivariate statistics.
