On the similarities and differences between the products of oxidation of hydrocarbons under simulated atmospheric conditions and cool flames

Roland Benoit et al.

Summary: Studies on atmospheric oxidation chemistry demonstrate that long-term oxidation progressively erases the initial signature of organic aerosol, leading to a relatively uniform character of oxygenated organic aerosol. Despite the diversity of reaction mechanisms observed in the early stages of oxidation, the uniformity character observed after long reaction times contrasts the initial diversity. Research on the oxidation of limonene at different experimental conditions suggests similarities in reaction mechanisms and chemical species formed between reactions at room temperature over long reaction times and at elevated temperature over short reaction times.
